Wind Ventures has been looking at the suitability of developing a new wind farm to the north east of Meddon, in the Torridge District of Devon. The proposed wind farm will have up to 5 turbines, up to 126m tall and, depending on the final turbine selection, can be expected to generate 22.8 to 28.5 million units of electrical power (kWh) per year, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 5,500 to 7,000 homes.
The Harbourcross wind farm can play a role in meeting the tough renewable energy targets set by the government, and help tackle climate change.
What stage is the project at?
Our wind mast went up in the spring of 2011, with permission to remain up to December 2013. This mast is providing data to optimise final turbine selection for this site.
Environmental appraisal work is almost complete with work being written to accompany the Planning Application. A Public Exhibition was held on 10 November 2011 and was well attended. Once submitted the planning application and supporting documents will be publicly available via the Torridge District Council website.
Community Benefit Scheme
Looking beyond the planning application, Wind Ventures want to set up a community development fund for the benefit of those in the area surrounding the wind farm. This fund would be £20,000 to £30,000 per year (£2,000 per MW of the completed Wind Farm) for the 25 to 30 year life of the wind farm. We want the local community to manage this fund and tell us how they want to apply it. Some suggestions are, investing in insulation and energy efficiency for local homes and businesses, a scholarship fund for local students, and a home help fund, supporting residents wishing to stay in their own home.
